CIC Global Collaborations Take the Lead in Comprehensive Internationalization

Aug 12, 2014, 13:21 PM

CIC universities continue lead the field of education abroad, with award-winning programming and insightful analysis of the structures and support for international study and overseas learning.

CIC universities continue to lead in the comprehensive internationalization of their campuses thanks to the dedication of the several CIC groups.  The CIC Senior International Officers, Study Abroad Directors, International Student and Scholar Directors, and Shared Programs Abroad Coordinators and their teams are facilitating the strategic integration of international, intercultural, and global dimensions into higher education.

Recent highlights include:

  • The Ohio State University and Rutgers University received the 2014 NAFSA "Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization" for excellence in integrating international education across all aspects of college and university campuses.  Named for the late Senator Paul Simon of Illinois and administered by NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the Simon Awards recognize outstanding and innovative achievements in campus internationalization. The 2014 Simon Award winners reflect a broad diversity of approaches to campus internationalization, both in terms of models and implementation.

  • The CIC Study Abroad Directors’ Group has created a major benchmarking initiative, The CIC International Learning Mobility Benchmark, to begin capturing a wide set of metrics that cover student participation, program management, as well as funding and support. The group piloted the study last year and foresees implementing the benchmarking annually. CIC member universities enroll 9% of the U.S. credit-bearing study abroad market, according to the most recent International Institute of Education (IIE) Open Doors report. This combination--of a small number of institutions that represent a significant data set--means that the CIC is in a unique position to benefit member institutions and to assist the field in addressing areas that have traditionally been challenging to report.

  • Five CIC universities are part of new multilateral university partnerships that have been created by the Global Innovation Initiative, a new program funded by the UK and U.S. governments to foster multilateral research collaborations with higher education institutions in Brazil, China, India, and Indonesia. Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers, Michigan, and Wisconsin-Madison are multilateral partners with institutions from the UK, Brazil, China, and India. Each partnership will receive a grant of up to £150,000 ($250,000) to fund new research activities, faculty and researcher exchange, joint publications and symposia, and other multilateral efforts. The total funding for these partnership grants is approximately £3 million ($5 million). In addition, the partner universities will support these projects with their own resources, such as use of laboratories, staff and faculty salaries, and private sector contributions valued at a total of roughly £4.27 million ($7.08 million).

Looking ahead, these CIC groups, through their collaborations, will continue to shape and inform the understandings of comprehensive internationalization on the global stage.
